What is Qurbani?
Qurbani (also known as Udhiya) is the sacred act of animal sacrifice carried out by Muslims during Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice. It commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son for Allah’s sake, before Allah provided a ram in the boy’s place. Each year, Muslims honour this devotion by sacrificing an animal to please Allah, often a sheep, goat, cow, or camel. The meat is then divided and distributed, mainly to those in need, as an act of charity and gratitude.

Who should give Qurbani?
Every Muslim who is financially able should perform Qurbani. Generally, if you are an adult Muslim who possesses wealth above a certain basic threshold (similar to the nisab for Zakat) during the days of Eid, Qurbani is expected of you.
It is considered wajib (obligatory) by many scholars for those who can afford it, and a strongly encouraged sunnah by others. If Allah has blessed you with sufficient means, you are encouraged to offer a Qurbani on behalf of yourself and your household.
When is Qurbani performed?
Qurbani is performed during Eid al-Adha, typically over the three days from the 10th to the 12th of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah (some extend to the 13th). The animal should be slaughtered after the Eid prayer on the 10th day;
doing it before the prayer would not count as Qurbani. Generally, Muslims complete their Qurbani by the third day of Eid, ensuring the meat reaches needy families in time for the Celebration.
When is Qurbani 2026
Eid al-Adha is expected to begin on Wednesday 27th May and end on Saturday 30th May, depending on moon sighting. It follows Hajj and marks the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah. Qurbani is carried out after Eid prayers and can be given across the 3 days. Stay prepared – donate early to ensure your Qurbani is fulfilled on time.
How is Qurbani done?
Qurbani involves slaughtering a halal animal (usually a sheep, goat, cow, or camel) in God’s name. One goat or sheep equals one Qurbani for one person, whereas a cow or camel can count for seven people’s Qurbani.
Traditionally, the meat is divided into three parts: one for your household, one for friends/neighbours, and one for the poor. Many Muslims now fulfil Qurbani by donating through charities that perform the sacrifice and distribute the meat to those most in need.
Who can receive qurbani?
We follow a clear assessment process to identify those most in need. Eligibility is based on factors such as:
Families living below their country’s minimum income level
Female-headed households
Families with disabled or elderly members
Children under five years old
Pregnant or breastfeeding mothers
Households with limited or no access to food markets
Our field teams carefully evaluate each family using this criteria to ensure support reaches the most vulnerable – fairly and without bias.

How much qurbani should i Give
Each eligible Muslim is required to give at least one Qurbani. However, giving more than one is entirely permitted – and spiritually encouraged. Many choose to give multiple Qurbanis, such as one locally and another abroad, to increase the benefit
and reward. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ offered more than one Qurbani: one for himself, and one for the Ummah. Following his example brings immense reward. This Dhul Hijjah, multiply your giving and your reward.

How does ‘give as a family’ work?
A Family Qurbani brings together 7 individual shares to sacrifice one large animal – such as a cow or bull – in fulfilment of your religious duty. It’s a meaningful way for families or groups to give
together and multiply the impact of their offering. At Islamic Help, this option supports communities in countries like Sudan and Tanzania – regions where Qurbani meat is needed most.

Why is Qurbani important?
Qurbani is a profound act of worship symbolising devotion, generosity, and gratitude. It honours the spirit of sacrifice shown by Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him),
who put Allah’s command above all else. Qurbani also shares blessings with the less fortunate: meat, a rare luxury for many, is distributed to poor families so they can celebrate Eid too.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is the significance of Qurbani?Qurbani is the sacrifice of an animal performed during Eid al-Adha to commemorate the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim. It symbolises obedience, gratitude, and willingness to give up what is valued for the sake of Allah, while supporting those in need. It also reinforces care for the less fortunate.
-
Who is required to perform Qurbani?Qurbani is obligatory for adult Muslims who meet the nisab threshold during Eid al-Adha. It applies to those who possess sufficient wealth beyond basic needs. Children and those without qualifying wealth are not required to perform Qurbani. This ruling ensures fairness based on financial ability.
-
Which animals are eligible for Qurbani?Eligible animals for Qurbani include sheep, goats, cows, and camels that meet specific age and health requirements. The animal must be free from significant defects, as the sacrifice should reflect care, respect, and adherence to Islamic guidelines. Meeting these conditions ensures the sacrifice is valid.
-
When must Qurbani be performed?Qurbani must be carried out after the Eid prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah and can continue until sunset on the 12th. Performing it before the Eid prayer invalidates the sacrifice and requires it to be repeated. Correct timing is essential for acceptance and reflects respect for the act of worship.
-
How is Qurbani meat distributed?Qurbani meat is traditionally divided into three equal parts: one for your household, one for relatives or friends, and one for those in need. This balance ensures personal celebration while supporting the wider community. Many choose to donate more to the poor to maximise impact during Eid.
-
How is Qurbani different from general charity?Qurbani differs from regular charity because it is a specific act of worship tied to time, intention, and ritual sacrifice. While charity can be given at any time, Qurbani must be performed during Eid al-Adha, provided the prescribed conditions are met. Both acts, however, aim to please Allah through giving.
